$32m boost for Kalgoorlie student housing

Date Published: 23/01/2017

The Liberal National Government has opened an expanded $32 million facility in Kalgoorlie to meet the increasing demand for accommodation for students undertaking training in the Goldfields.

The Agricola College project, designed by architects AJ+C, has been made possible by a $20 million investment from the State Government's Royalties for Regions Skills Training Initiative and $10.8 million from Curtin University.

Deputy Premier and Training and Workforce Development Minister Liza Harvey said the original facility dated back to the 1970s and the significant upgrade would now meet the needs of today's students.

Ms Harvey said the new facility would provide high-quality accommodation for 228 students, with 180 new individual bedrooms and refurbished 48-bed single storey accommodation.

"The development is important in providing quality and affordable housing for students who want to study in the Goldfields, including those attending Central Regional TAFE's Kalgoorlie campus and Curtin University's Western Australian School of Mines," she said.

"These institutions attract students from all over Western Australia, the nation and overseas, so the Agricola project is a significant way of supporting industry training, the region and the people who study here."

Regional Development Minister Terry Redman said the project would improve the availability of student accommodation and assist in retaining existing students in the region while they undertook vocational education and training.

"With the new facility set to attract students, industries needing to employ locally will also stand to benefit as graduates will be more inclined to move into the regional workforce," Mr Redman said.

"I am pleased the State Government through Royalties for Regions is making a difference by providing opportunities through this strategic investment to enhance the future of our regions."
