Is your family ready to put down roots in a place you can call home? It’s time we talked about Kardinya. Those who grew up here already know it’s a well-established suburb in Perth’s south close to beaches, parks, cafes, schools and shopping. Now the secret is out about what makes this green leafy locale one of Perth’s top 10 most tightly held suburbs.
Picture yourself living here too? Here’s a list of ten of the top things to do in Kardinya.
1. Kardinya Tavern
South Street, Kardinya
We kick off with a local favourite, the Kardinya Tavern, or “Kardy” as it is affectionately known. You’ll love this great local pub and its warm, family friendly atmosphere where everyone is welcome. Catch up with friends over a few drinks, dine out for date night, round up the family for a weekend lunch – the food’s great and the staff are happy and friendly. TAB, Sports Bar, Bistro, pool tables, chef’s specials, fresh salad bar – what more could you ask for from your local pub?
2. Aviation Heritage Museum
Bull Creek Drive, Bull Creek
With over 30 aircraft in two huge hangars, you could easily spend half a day at the Aviation Heritage Museum, just up the road in Bull Creek. This really is a fun place for you and the kids to get up close and personal with aviation history, like the Lancaster Bomber (one of only two left in Australia), Tiger Moth, Spitfire, Dakota, helicopter, aircraft engines, propellors and more. Sit inside part of a real plane, or watch a video of Wings over Wanaka in New Zealand. It’s operated by volunteers (many aviation vets) who love sharing their knowledge on private tours.
3. Adventure World
Progress Drive, Bibra Lake
Looking for a day jam packed with fun? Adventure World is a southern suburb family favourite, just a stone’s throw away in Bibra Lake. This popular theme park has been terrifying and tantalising adrenaline junkies since the 90s, with 25 world-class rollercoasters, waterslides and other attractions, from the tame (think Dragon’s Kingdom and Kahuna Falls), to the terrifying (Goliath, Abyss and Kraken, the longest, tallest and steepest funnel water slide on the planet). Enter if you dare and have an awesome day!
4. Kardinya Park Shopping Centre
South Street, Kardinya
One of the simple pleasures of being part of a well-established suburb like Kardinya is meeting friends and neighbours at the local shops. Kardinya Park Shopping Centre is just such a quintessential meeting place, with a great range of shops, community experiences and service with a smile. See you there!
5. Royal Fremantle Golf Club
High Street, Fremantle
Fancy a swing amongst stately surrounds? Just a short drive away is Royal Fremantle, a private member’s course established in 1905 still being played over a century on. It’s a course not for the faint hearted, where only the best swings survive once the Fremantle Doctor arrives after midday! If you can tame it, you’ll be treated like true royalty!
6. Beeliar Regional Park
Farrington Road, North Lake
This beautiful chain of lakes, wetlands and bushland is a great place to take the kids to bushwalk and bird watch in a relatively undisturbed natural environment. It’s a pretty special place, home to wildlife nesting and feeding habitats, as well as summer refuges for birds that migrate from the northern hemisphere. Get outside, get active and get in touch with nature, right on your doorstep.
7. Garden City Shopping Centre
Risely Street, Booragoon
Ask anyone and they’ll tell you Garden City is a shopping haven, with shoppers flocking from both north and south of the river to experience this premium shopping centre located 15 minutes south of Perth CBD. At Kardinya, you’ll have over 200 specialty stores just a ten minute drive away, including David Jones, Myer, Zara, Apple Store, Kmart, JB Hi-Fi, Mimco, Nespresso and Country Road, as well as a range of cafes to recover at after your retail rendezvous!
8. Harper's Food Market
South Street, O'Connor
Escape the humming traffic inside this hidden gem and soak up a soothing haven featuring an eclectic mix of fresh food, gourmet delights and everyday basics, renowned by locals as a ‘grocer, florist, cafe and lunch bar in one’. The cabinets are full of amazing ready-made food and deli basics, including well-priced croissants, insta-worthy focaccias and freshly baked creations from the nearby Littlesweet Baking. Act like a true local and order a coffee to go to cap off this unique, old school experience.
9. Formosa Vegetarian Eating House
South Street, Kardinya
Described by locals as a ‘unicorn’ restaurant thanks to its almost unbelievable combination of tasty vegetarian, vegan, allergy-friendly, halal-certified and mock meat creations! Tucked away behind the Kardinya Tavern, we love the fried chicken and spicy hou tou (monkey head) mushrooms, while the satay lamb and combination BBQ platter are local favourites. No meat, but a great place to meet – you just have to try it!
10. Piney Lakes Reserve
Leach Highway, Winthrop
With 50 hectares of bushland and 17 hectares of parklands, this serene and tranquil reserve is a hotspot for walking, jogging, cycling and more. Explore the strategic path network, wetland boardwalk, picnic areas, Environmental Education Centre and sensory playground. Education and fun, all at once? No wonder locals pine for it!
11. The Heights, Kardinya
Buckingham Crescent, Kardinya
Ok, we know we said top 10, but no list of Kardinya must-sees is complete without mentioning The Heights, a community minded estate that offers the quintessential Kardinya lifestyle. The stunning display home is open every Saturday & Sunday between 2- 3:30pm or by appointment on weekdays.
